Experts warn: 'Be covered this Christmas'

There is a clear increase in the value of home insurance claims over the Christmas period, according to one leading insurance provider.

esure has advised people to ensure their homes are protected and their home insurance premium is up-to-date in case the worst happens this winter.

With the number of claims for theft from homes increasing over the festive period, the firm has advised homeowners to hide presents, keep blinds and curtains closed and to be careful disposing of rubbish, so no unwanted attention is brought from prying eyes.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, has said the value of presents both bought and received "can add up to a hefty sum".

"It is important to make sure you have ample contents cover, especially around this time of year when thefts tend to be more targeted and the value of burglaries are higher than any other season," he added.

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society recently recommended that people ensure they are covered for accidental damage in their home insurance premiums, as breakages and damage can occur when Christmas decorations are being put up.
